Tim Gunn's Guide To Style Premiere Party

Darlings, we had an opportunity to attend the launch party for Tim's new show at the SoHo Grand last night, but since we're still unpacking (and hanging mirrors and painting trim and debating furniture arrangements and wondering why we have so many baskets and so on) we regretfully had to decline. But fret not, for we had a certain someone on the inside do our dirty work for us and they sent us these pics for your enjoyment.

The man of the hour.

Our spy tells us that Tim spent over an hour talking to the press.

Tim getting his groove on to Natasha Bedingfield.

The Bravo Posse, representing.

Marsha Tonkins, Tim's assistant. She's worked with Tim Gunn for 12 years, following him to Liz Claiborne from Parson's.

Tim with professional starfucker, Michael Musto.

Tim Gunn's biggest fan, CEO of Liz Claiborne, Bill McComb.
Tim: "Bill is a genius and a visionary."

Laura Bennett and Emmett McCarthy give Tim a group hug.

Kara Janx with husband Red and "Bump."

Jeffrey looks good. Our spy tells us that he did NOT throw a drink in Laura's face or get in a hair-pulling match with her, but we'll let you in on any further details as they become available.

You gotta give Project Runway props for one thing: they did manage to find and spotlight some truly unique characters.

The Dish has more Tim Gunn party photos.

Out Gunned.

Out Magazine put big old mess Marc Jacobs on the cover, but as in life, it's what's inside that counts. First, an interview with Tim Gunn.

So you didn't grow up fixated on fashion?
I was fixated on architecture and interiors, which of course had everybody worried. I had a really butch father — so butch I thought maybe he was a closet case. He was an FBI agent and a sports lover, and the only sport I could even participate in was swimming, because it was nice and clean and you didn’t sweat.

On politics:

Who on Capitol Hill needs
Tim Gunn's Guide to Style most?
Laura Bush. Oh, my God!

On Project Runway:

You have no influence over the judges?

None. It keeps me an honest man. I have no interaction with them at all, but that doesn't mean they don't drive me to total despair.

And how do they do that?

How do the judges drive me to total despair? By smoking crack! By making decisions I can't fathom.

On his show:
You're quick to point out that
Guide to Style isn't a typical makeover show.
I'm not a fashion Svengali. I don't throw clothes at you and tell you if you wear these things, all your fashion foibles will go away. I'm a fashion therapist.

On his personal life:

How's your romantic life?

I haven’t been in a relationship since 1982. God, that sounds pathetic. But I was so severely hurt that I’ve never, ever gotten over it. I was so madly and desperately in love that I didn’t see the end coming. It was a routine night on the couch watching television, and he turned to me and just said, 'I don’t have the patience for you. I can’t do this anymore.' After nine years. I still remember leaving his apartment, driving down Rock Creek Parkway in Washington, D.C., thinking,
Maybe I’ll just drive right off the bridge.

Then they followed up with their favorite PR alums by making them pose for a dorky picture. Emmett says they had to "make it work" with tin foil, whatever that means.

Four Gayboys Four

What happens when four gayboys get together to look at old dresses? Pictures get taken and posted on the internet, that's what!

A couple weekends ago, Emmett called us and said he was coming into Philly that day with his gorgeous boyfriend to do some thrift store browsing. We of course dropped our plans of laying around and doing nothing to spend the day with them.

After getting them lost by giving them bad directions to our place, Emmett and Pierre showed up and we immediately made them pose for a picture in our living room:

How cute are they?

Those bitches said we would all go out to lunch but then they stopped and got cheese steaks on the the way. We were starving by the time they showed up so we forced them to watch us eat and yes, to pose for more pictures.

Then, it was off to the thrift stores to make fun of old dresses!

Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. That must have been one gigantic bridesmaid because this dress went straight to Emmett's ankles.

Peach is not your color, poodle.

Lorenzo favors the Liza look, while Pierre is working a Laura Ashley early '90s vibe.

Prom picture. The only thing that's missing is a cheap corsage on Tom and a fresh pack of condoms in Emmett's pocket.

Look for Emmett's Tricia Nixon-inspired line in Spring 2008!

There were other pictures taken but we figure we can get a couple grand out of Emmett if we promise not to post them. Fun was had by all!

Behind The Scenes at EMc2

Darlings, before they headed out to the Shear Genius finale party, Lorenzo spent some time at Emmett McCarthy's design studio and snapped some shots. We thought you'd get a kick out of seeing one of the designers at work.

Emmett's sketches are, in the words of St. Tim, "sublime." He showed us a book of his sketches once and they're breathtaking.

He's currently working on his Spring '08 collection. Both of those dresses are gorgeous but the one on the left is fabulous. He's also working on a line of shoes and handbags, which are guaranteed to be to-die-for, no?

With Erin McDonnell, EMc2's VP of Design. Last month, we had the distinct pleasure of having lunch with Emmett, Erin and our good friend and supporter, Ann, aka Gorgeous Things. Erin has a sweet, friendly, low-key personality but when she starts talking about the business, that all fades away to reveal how whip-smart and on-her-game she is.

Unfortunately, the boys had to rush off and be fabulous for the cameras at the party, so these shots were all they had time for, but rest assured, we'll be back. Emmett's got more pies in the oven than you realize and there's going to be several announcements in the months to come. Watch What Happens, kittens!

Mother, May I?

Just a reminder, darlings, that Emmett McCarthy's EMC2 is having a one-day in-store and online sale today and these dresses are gorgeous. Mother's Day is this weekend, so buy yourself a Mother's Day gift or buy yourself a Thank-God-I'm-Not-a-Mother's Day gift. It's a win/win, kittens!

Now THAT'S what we call CLOSURE!

Sometimes even auf'd reality show contestants get a happy ending.

"Hi Boys,

Tootie is now behind us!

Anne Slowey visited EMc2 last week and is planning a feature for Elle Magazine. So, Kittens, reality TV: What you see is not always what you get.

Love,
Emmett"

Aw, now we feel bad for calling her Not-Nina. We have to say, we are really impressed by that. Good for you, Anne!

Thursday, March 22, 2007

We're still pissed.

Lorenzo needed time alone last night to compose himself after we watched this again. This is the bullshittiest of bullshit judgments.

Oh Not-Nina. How we hate you. Bitch needs to get the hell over her sour self and at least attempt to be consistent when she's being a bitch. It was both dowdy AND vulgar? No. That makes no fucking sense. There was "entirely too much tootie" here and yet there were plenty of other tooties roller-skating down that runway that she blithely ignored.

Sour, nasty, no-sense-making ...ugh. Worst judge ever. The girl from the post office did a better job.

It's not that we thought this was a winner or anything but geez, it at least looked like a skater's costume, unlike several other entries that we'll get to later. Too basic and way too sparkly, but honestly, there was no reason for this to be the losing entry. It makes no damn sense.

And yeah, the skirt is way too short but come on, Shannon's easily 8 inches taller than Sasha. You can't design a skating costume for a short girl and have it worn by a tall girl without at least some type of fit issue manifesting itself. Like we said, there were several other tooties waving at us on that runway.

And poor Emmett. Not only was it a bullshit auf'ing, it also wasn't the most dignified way to go, looking as he did like Tony Orlando sans Dawn. God bless him, he still managed to walk off that runway wearing a neon pink pirate blouse, head held high and able to quip his way out. We'd have probably run off screaming and crying.

Poodles! It's Emmett's Anniversary!

And you're invited!

EMC2 is celebrating its first anniversary tomorrow night and the fabulous Emmett is throwing a fabulous party.

Emmett sent us this picture of the EMC2 team and we asked him to write a little bit about each person. Before we get to that, we want to embarrass him a little bit.

Of all the unexpected things to happen with this blog, meeting and befriending Emmett has probably been the MOST unexpected (because let's face it, we KNEW we were going to meet Laura and hit it off with her, that was practically a given). He is the classic example of a highly talented person who just doesn't work well in reality television. Our initial impression as viewers was that he seemed like a nice enough guy; kinda cute, kinda talented, but a little bland. We could not have been more wrong about him, we're happy to say. He is loaded with personality - funny, bitchy, intelligent, but also sweet and kind. Oh, and he's gorgeous. Most importantly, he is a very talented designer producing some beautiful clothing - which is why we tend to write about him often. Not because we adore him personally, but because he's really putting his stuff out there in a way almost none of the other PR contestants do. And he's very gracious to the PR fanatics out there, ourselves included. He appreciates all the support and constantly looks for ways to keep them included and updated. He's just an all-around great guy and we're so pleased that we've gotten a chance to know him.

So, without further ado, we give you Team EMC2, In EMC's own words:

Rainer Wolter, Design and Production at EMc2, Rainer does a great job taking the concept from sketch to initial pattern to sample to final production. Rainer started with EMc2 and on his first day we went looking for available storefronts in NoLita. Rainer has seen what starting a design company from the ground up is all about. There was NOTHING (other than working with leather or fur) that Rainer could not do or master. A farm boy who knows what dedication and work ethic is all about! (And he is HOT TO DEATH - T&L)

Erin McDonnell, VP of Design, Erin and I have been friends and worked together 10 years ago. We celebrated St. Patrick's day together for many years never thinking we would be celebrating the first EMc2 anniversary together! Last year I called and asked her to sell her jewelry designs exclusively at EMc2. Erin joined our team and works on designing the ready to wear, shoes and our upcoming handbag collections. Together we research trends, fabrics and manufacturers ,she joined our team in February '07 first traveling to Milan and Paris. Erin is steadfast on getting our design schedule together. Erin brings experience, design talent and determination and support to every design project we tackle. She offers such an array of talent and is our newest member to our staff, but was there from the beginning with her coordinating her jewelry designs with our EMc2 fashions.

Emmett McCarthy, CEO, Design Director, Business Owner

Dimitry Chamy, Brand Director, Dimitry and I met 10 years ago when he was earning his Masters in Graphic Design at Yale.We clicked immediately and have been friends for all these years and he encouraged me every step of the way while auditioning for Project Runway! Who knew what was next! When the idea of starting a brand with a flagship boutique came up, Dimitry jumped in and helped in choosing the space and then sight unseen, designed the interior from measurements and photos. Dimitry carefully crafted the brand identity and all the collateral materials for the company. Dimitry also designs and maintains our website and is launching our web store. (He designs all of the beautiful graphics you've seen on the blog as well as the ad you see to your right. Talented and an utter sweetheart - T&L)

Arielle Silva, Merchandise Manager. Arielle started as an intern and joined our team December 05. Arielle pulls together our photo shoots, and merchandises the EMC2 designs on the sales floor.

Missing from this photo are:
Sheri Hammerstrom, Operations Manager who handles the banking and oversees the accounting and store operations. Sheri is an opera singer, teaches voice lessons. I also worked with Sheri at another job 5 years ago, and when I could not do all the important details she took over. She has a BUNNY named Avery and Avery turned out to be a GIRL!

Steven Bocks, Leather and Sheerling Specialist. Steven is a gift to the EMc2 team who arrived in October 07. Steven shares his 20 years of his Luxury SoHo Design and Retail experience. Steven works hard during the week designing custom outerwear sold exclusively at EMc2. Every weekend Steven is styling clients and keeping the spirit of the boutique lively, (his music taste runs very 70's disco!)

Peggy and David McCarthy, My parents who invested their money with the faith that I will make them proud venture capitalists.

Chloe & Emmett: You wuz ROBBED!

This should have been the winner, poodles. No doubt about it.

It was chic and stylish, perfectly executed, and the window looked fantastic.

That skirt is hot.

You know, normally we'd hate a big floppy bow on a blouse like this. Always makes us think of Lily Tomlin in "Nine to Five." But this works, probably because the exposed skin makes it sexier.

MAJOR kudos to Grace for whipping that thing off and reversing it on the runway without missing a beat. Now that's a model.

We're not super-crazy about the fabric on the jacket, veering as it does dangerously close to tacky. Then again, these are the official Banana Republic fabrics for that season, so we can't really blame them for working with what they were given.

Which brings us to our judging bullshittery of the week. Emmett's not very good at keeping his thoughts off his face, is he?

"I loved this outfit."

*pleased as punch*

"The only thing I look at...I think it looks very Bergdorf and not very Banana Republic."

*thinking 'You WISH your stuff looked good enough for Bergdorf's, you tacky queen'*

Seriously, what kind of criticism is that? This is right up BR's alley. Simple, classically inspired, well-tailored - AND done in BR's own fabrics. Sometimes those bitches just make up shit to criticize.

God almighty, how the hell tall IS Grace? Because Emmett's like seven-and-a-half-feet tall.
